Phonics and Reading

At Risby CEVC Primary School, we recognise that learning to read is one of the most important skills children will develop. We aim to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader who develops a lifelong love of books and reading.

Phonics

We teach phonics using Read Write Inc. (RWI), a systematic synthetic phonics programme. Children are taught to recognise sounds, blend sounds together to read words and develop increasing fluency and confidence.

Children's progress in phonics is regularly assessed so that teaching can be carefully matched to their needs. Where children require additional support, appropriate intervention is provided to help them keep up and make good progress.

Alongside learning to decode words, children are encouraged to talk about what they read, develop their vocabulary and enjoy a wide range of stories, poems and other texts.

Our Reading Scheme

Our school reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree. Books are carefully selected to support children's developing reading skills and provide opportunities to practise reading both at school and at home.

As children become increasingly fluent and confident readers, they are encouraged to experience a broad and varied range of high-quality texts. Reading for pleasure is an important part of school life, and we encourage children to develop their own interests and enthusiasm for books.

We value the important role that parents and carers play in children's reading development and encourage regular reading at home.
